HARLINGEN — Next year’s proposed street repair budget keeps getting bigger.
But it won’t break the city’s budget.
Today, city commissioners will consider approving the first reading of a proposed $41 million general fund budget that includes a $1 million street repair program, City Manager Dan Serna said yesterday.
Meanwhile, officials proposed using the money to pave four or five selected streets on the west side of town.
It’s the third time Serna has ramped up the proposed street fund for the upcoming year as he works to come up with a balanced budget for fiscal year 2016-2017.
Last month, Serna proposed a $750,000 street repair fund.
But city commissioners asked him to come up with more money for streets.

Tax rate proposed to remain at 65 cents per $100 of valuation.
At the current rate, a home assessed at $150,000 will continue to pay $882 in annual taxes for city services.
