The San Benito Greyhounds may have lost a lot of talented guys over the offseason, but it appears that they found a bunch of new ones.
At least that’s what it looked like after the ’Hounds routed Laredo Alexander in their season opener last Thursday, 47-21.
On Friday, the Greyhounds, who are ranked No. 2 in the Valley’s Top 10, will take on the San Antonio East Central Hornets (1-0) in their home opener and the Valley Morning Star’s Game of the Week.
The Hornets were winners in their season opener last week as they beat San Marcos 40-21.
As for the ’Hounds, junior quarterback Erick Retta led the charge in their win with 294 yards of total offense and four touchdowns. Through the air he was 18 of 25 for 219 yards and three TDs while on the ground he pounded out 75 yards on 12 carries for another score.
Junior wide receiver Isaiah Trevino was the recipient of two of Retta’s TD passes as he hauled in three receptions for 58 yards and the two scores. Senior Rene Garcia, meanwhile, caught nine passes for 73 yards and the other passing touchdown.
Other games of interest in the area this weekend include: PSJA High at Harlingen South, Laredo United South at Harlingen High, Grulla at Raymondville, Brownsville St. Joseph at Lyford, Santa Rosa at La Villa, Tomball Christian at Port Isabel, McAllen Rowe at Mercedes and Monte Alto at Santa Maria.
PSJA (1-0) and South (1-0) kick things off on Thursday night. The Hawks won their opener last week, beating McAllen High 21-14. PSJA was also victorious in its season debut, beating Donna North 36-33.
The top-ranked Harlingen Cardinals, meanwhile, look to improve to 2-0 as they host the Panthers (0-1) on Friday. The Cards routed Mission Veterans last Thursday 44-14 while United South fell to San Antonio Wagner 20-17.
NOTES: The Port Isabel vs. Tomball Christian contest set for Friday at PI, was recently added to the Tarpons’ schedule. Originally, the Tarps were set to have an open date this week. PI (1-0) won its season opener last week over Brownsville Lopez 15-14 in overtime… Lyford head coach Jaime Infante will be looking for win No. 101 when his Bulldogs host St. Joseph on Friday. The veteran coach picked up win 100 after the Dogs thumped Progreso 59-6 last week.
