SAN BENITO — Cameron County Juvenile Justice Department has spearheaded an Anti-Stigma campaign, aimed at providing hope and resiliency to youth and families in the Rio Grande Valley.
In an effort to eliminate stigma, Texas Institute for Excellence in Mental Health and Texas Health and Human Services Commission in collaboration with Cameron County Juvenile Justice Department have played an instrumental role in the Anti-Stigma campaign.
The campaign strongly emphasizes the importance of family involvement; all while building relationships with the community and local leaders.
The Anti-Stigma campaign will consist of a series of events in three phases. The first phase will be a Juvenile Justice Event in the Rio Grande Valley.
The second phase will be in collaboration with the local school district. The final phase will be a round table discussion with community leaders and decision makers in the mental health profession.
The first phase of the Anti-Stigma campaign will consist of a series of events in the Rio Grande Valley, split up into three days, Aug. 30, Aug. 31, and September 1st.
The first day will feature presentations for Cameron County Juvenile Justice Center by Jason Wang, a former adjudicated youth who spent three years in the Texas Juvenile Justice Corrections System.
Jason will share his story about his experience in the Juvenile System, and how he decided to turn his life around.
Jason will also be making appearances and presentations at the Evins Regional State Center, Tamayo Halfway House, and Harlingen Outreach Center on Wednesday, Aug. 31.
The closure of phase one of the Anti-Stigma campaign will be held at the Hidalgo County Juvenile Justice Department, on Thursday, Sept. 1.
