HARLINGEN — Valley International Airport might be manning its own fire department in the future.
Airport board members this week recommended the City Commission approve a $6 million budget for the upcoming fiscal year.
However, as the board mulled cost-cutting steps, members discussed staffing a fire department to cut $965,000 it pays the city to provide fire protection.
“Every year when we do budget, we look at ways to possibly control costs,” Marv Esterly, the airport’s director of aviation, said.
