The Texas Department of Public Safety is investigating a fatal two car accident on the Queen Isabella Memorial Causeway that has shutdown the bridge for hours.

DPS troopers say one woman was killed when a Mercedes Benz and a Ford utility van collided on the eastbound lanes of the causeway headed toward the island around 8:30 this morning.

The eastbound lanes of the bridge remain closed and the traffic is backed up all the way to Port Isabel. Motorists stranded on the bridge are being turned around so they can drive back to Port Isabel.

TxDOT says the rail and deck of the causeway were not compromised by the force of the crash. The agency says DPS will recreate the scene of the accident.

The causeway is expected to reopen this afternoon.
