HARLINGEN — It appears taxpayers aren’t going to see a property tax rate increase — at least not this year.
In a special meeting last night, city commissioners agreed not to raise the city’s tax rate of 58 cents per $100 valuation. But officials said they’d still find a way to fund more street repairs.
Today, commissioners will hold a public hearing at noon to allow taxpayers to speak about the tax rate and city budget.
At the current rate, 1 cent generates $328,945.
During the upcoming fiscal year, increased assessments are expected to generate about $707,000 more in tax revenue.
“I don’t think we have to be raising taxes at this point,” Commissioner Victor Leal told commissioners in the five-minute meeting last night.
Commissioner Michael Mezmar asked City Manager Dan Serna to “look at numbers” in case officials consider a possible tax increase next year.
