Police find missing Donna woman’s car in canal

MERCEDES – The search for Yvette Franco continued late into the night after police pulled her car out of a canal off FM 491 in Mercedes last evening.

Franco body was not found in the submerged car.

By midnight the sheriff had called off the search and left a deputy at the crime scene over night. This morning, they are back on the scene searching for the missing woman in the canal.

Franco, 24, and her black Toyota Corolla had been missing since July 30.

“A fisherman called Mercedes PD at about 7:39 p.m. and said she noticed a vehicle in the water,” said Eddie Guerra, Hidalgo County sheriff.

Police worked for hours trying to identify and recover the vehicle from the water.

At about 10:30 p.m. Guerra reported to the media that the submerged car belonged Franco.

Guerra confirmed at about 11:30 that Franco was not in the car after it was pulled out of the water.

Guerra said the car was submerged in water 10-feet to 15-feet deep.

Franco was last seen wearing a maroon blouse, blue jeans, black Converse shoes, according to the news release.

She wears glasses and has a tattoo of a diamond near her left shoulder.
