Warning: Forecasters issue heat index alert

HARLINGEN — The National Weather Service in Brownsville has issued a heat index alert which will be in effect for Cameron and Willacy counties through next Thursday.

Weather forecasters said heat indices, which are a combination of temperature and humidity in the air, could rise to between 105 and 110 degrees for several hours each afternoon through next week.

The weather service said areas of Cameron and Willacy counties have about a 20-percent chance of isolated showers and thunderstorms each day through Sunday.

Forecasters also said dangerous rip currents are possible along Gulf of Mexico beaches.
