CBP: Smuggler crashes marijuana filled minivan into the Rio Grande

U.S. Customs and Border Protection says officers pulled a suspected drug smuggler from the Rio Grande after he crashed his minivan into the river.

According to a CBP news release, officers spotted the man on Wednesday driving away from the river in a van filled with marijuana.

They say the driver made a U-turn and sped away, crashing his minivan into the Rio Grande. Officers helped the driver out of the water and placed him under arrest.

The San Benito Fire Department pulled the vehicle out of the water.

Inside officers found eight bundles with 1,000 pounds of marijuana. The drug has a street value of $800,000.
