Harlingen district to change school zone hours

HARLINGEN — Keep an eye on those school zone flashing lights because hours are changing across the city.

The Harlingen school district requested the change to coincide with new school hours, Oscar Tapia, assistant superintendent for district operations and school safety, said yesterday.

Around elementary schools, school zones will require motorists to maintain 20 mph speed limits from 6:45 to 8:30 a.m. and 2:50 to 4:30 p.m. Mondays through Fridays.

At middle schools and high schools, school zone signs will be flashing between 6:45 and 8:30 a.m. and 3:15 to 4:30 p.m.

In a meeting Wednesday, city commissioners approved an ordinance revising school zone signs at the district’s elementary schools, middle schools and high schools.
