Two wrecks cause causeway to shutdown for hours

SOUTH PADRE ISLAND – A five-car accident on the Queen Isabella Memorial Causeway Sunday left drivers stuck in traffic for several hours and then lead to a second wreck.

The initial accident happened at about 5:30 p.m. on the westbound lanes of the causeway and caused two vehicles to roll over. Traffic on those lanes was stopped for two hours.

The Texas Department of Public Safety says that crash caused a chain reaction as three drivers going eastbound onto South Padre Island collided while observing the initial crash.

“They were watching the crash by slowing down,” said DPS spokeswoman Sgt. Maria Montalvo.

Montalvo said several people involved in both crash scenes were transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
