HARLINGEN — It’s another heat wave today.
The National Weather Service in Brownsville has issued a special weather statement warning of a heat alert in Cameron and Willacy counties.
The weather service says Harlingen, Raymondville, South Padre Island, Port Isabel and nearby cities are within the alert area.
The high for Harlingen will be 97 degrees, with temperatures rising the farther one travels up the Valley, with 100 forecast for McAllen and 103 predicted for Rio Grande City.
Heat indexes today are expected to hit between 105 and 110 degrees throughout the Valley.
Meteorologists say high pressure in the middle layers of the atmosphere are what is producing the hot temperatures.
Some areas will see heat indexes rising above 110 degrees in some areas for an hour or two this afternoon.
People who have to be outdoors should drink plenty of water, wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing and take frequent breaks.
Also they warn against leaving young children or pets in a vehicle for any amount of time.
The heat index is a measure of warm temperatures and high dewpoints.
