McALLEN — Miguel Maldonado is still waiting to hear if his family will receive any money for the death of his 61-year-old sister Adelfa Garza after a charter bus crash in May near Laredo killed nine people and injured 42 more.
“I had no idea there had already been a settlement,” Maldonado said Saturday morning. “We were under the impression they were still working things out and hoping to get some of that money because we were deeply affected by her death.”
Last week attorneys representing victims in the crash learned the insurance company had already paid out more than $3.5 of the $5 million available through the bus company’s liability coverage. This was the minimum liability coverage required for the bus company to operate and the only money guaranteed for everyone affected by this crash.
More than a dozen attorneys have pending lawsuits against the bus company, OGA Charters LLC; Porfirio Aguirre, the bus driver; Elvia Estrada, a contracted bus coordinator for the casino; and the Kickapoo Lucky Eagle Casino and Hotel, where the bus was headed before the deadly rollover crash.
