Volunteers to head back home

SAN BENITO — After a month volunteering at La Posada Providencia, Sister Wendolyn Lopez Santos and Sister Sally Vega Alvaredo will be saying goodbye as they travel home this week.

They were both great volunteers and will be truly missed, said volunteer coordinator Adriana Garcia.

Santos and Alvaredo came to La Posada from Puerto Rico to volunteer during the month of June.

Not only did they volunteer as English as a Second Language teachers, but they also helped pitch in whenever and wherever they were needed.

“During the sisters’ stay, they also helped with transportation and cooking. Sister Sally enjoyed teaching the clients because it gave her the opportunity to learn about them and to hear their stories,” Garcia said.

For Santos, her favorite part was driving clients back and forth to their various appointments. She enjoyed having that time to converse with them.

“It was a good experience. It makes a person grow,” Alvaredo said.

It was also a learning experience for her because of the language barrier.

Her native language is Spanish. Teaching English from that perspective was not as easy.
