In Limbo? Constable decision unclear as commissioners meet today

LA FERIA — Who’s going to fill Constable Cesar Rene Diaz’s position when he takes over as La Feria’s police chief?

Today, Cameron County commissioners are expected to meet in closed session to discuss a replacement for Diaz, who will take over as La Feria’s top cop July 7.

But Commissioner Gus Ruiz, who represents the Harlingen and La Feria area, said commissioners might hold off on an appointment because Diaz’s last day on as Precinct 5’s constable isn’t until July 6.

“For us, tomorrow might be a bit too premature to make an appointment,” Ruiz said in an interview yesterday. “We should have a consensus on this issue. It’s very important to residents of Precinct 5.”

Commissioner Sofia Benavides said Eddie Solis, the Democratic nominee who defeated Diaz in the March primary, might be considered as an “option.”

But, after being told, Benavides said she had not realized Solis still must face Republican Don Duncan in November’s general election.

When asked whether Solis was being considered for the appointment, Ruiz only said, “It’s whatever the Commissioners’ Court wants to do.”

County Judge Pete Sepulveda said he would not consider Solis for the appointment.

“I personally would stay away from something like that,” Sepulveda said. “I think it wouldn’t be fair to the other candidate (Duncan).”
