SAN BENITO — Neighbors of a home located south of San Benito reported gunshots and screams to police late Thursday night.
The Cameron County Sheriff’s Department SWAT team responded.
That’s when they found a 28-year-old Marine veteran barricaded inside his home on the 34000 block of Quail Drive.
He refused to leave his home to be questioned by officers.
Officers received the call at 11 p.m. about the man who neighbors said was screaming and shouting. They said he allegedly fired a weapon.
Officers assessed the situation upon arrival as he continued to refuse to talk to officers.
The department’s main concern was the neighborhood. It was a nice neighborhood with several neighbors in the area, said Sheriff Omar Lucio.
Lucio said his officers and the man’s father negotiated with him for several hours. His father, who visits his son on a daily basis, said his son suffers from medical issues.
Lucio said he did not see any weapons.
“There was no evidence of a crime. It was just alleged that he had discharged a firearm,” Lucio said.
