Officials probe fatal collision

SEBASTIAN — Charges are pending in the case of a 20-year-old Harlingen man killed while racing another motorcyclist, authorities said.

Authorities are investigating the death of Dylan James Morales, killed just east of Sebastian about 11 p.m. Sunday.

Morales was racing a 2007 Colt motorcycle against a man riding a 2007 Honda motorcycle when the two motorcycles crashed on FM 1018 just east of FM 507, said Sgt. Maria Montalvo, a spokeswoman with the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Morales, who was wearing a helmet, was ejected from his motorcycle, Montalvo said.

Montalvo said the other motorcyclist, who was not wearing a helmet, remains in critical condition at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen.

The other man’s name was withheld, she said.

Montalvo said neither drugs nor alcohol was involved in the crash.

“DPS troopers continue to investigate this fatal crash and charges are pending,” Montalvo said in a statement.

Demetrio Morales, Dylan James Morales’ father, said he helped instill his son’s passion for motorcycles.

“He said, ‘If I die tomorrow on my motorcycle, I’ll die with a smile,” Morales said as he held back tears. “He had a smile you couldn’t forget. He loved the wind, the cruise, the rush and the excitement.”
