HARLINGEN — The National Weather Service in Brownsville has issued a heat index alert for Cameron, Willacy, Starr and Hidalgo counties.
Temperatures will push 100 degrees today, and combined with high dewpoints, will produce a heat index of up to 108 degrees.
The heat index measures what the combination of humidity and high temperature feels like to the human body.
The weather service said the high heat index conditions will arrive in late morning today and continue through the entire weekend into the evening hours of Sunday.
The NWS advises residents planning outdoor activities to wear lightweight and light-colored clothing and to take frequent breaks from the heat.
They warn that young children and pets should not be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances, since temperatures in vehicles can reach lethal levels within minutes.
