La Feria’s Joseph Lunn takes 1st in Class 4A 300 hurdles

AUSTIN — The weather delayed the final day of the UIL state track and field meet by six hours.

But when the weather finally calmed down, it seemed that La Feria senior 300-meter hurdler Joseph Lunn did the same.

“Before the rain I felt nervous, but after it came I told myself that it’s my senior year and I just have to go out there and have fun,” Lunn said. “Before the race, I was talking and joking with the other competitors, but then I got in my blocks and I told myself it was time to get serious.”

He did just that and more, capturing the gold medal in the Class 4A 300 hurdles with a time of 39.34 Saturday night at the University of Texas’ Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin.

After Lunn slowed during the final turn, he finished the final 100 meters strong and edged out Bushland High School’s sophomore Remington Crossnoe (39.42) and Tyler Chapel Hill’s Austin Railsback (39.49).

Even when he fell behind, the clutch senior knew he had it in him.

“When the gun went off, all I did was run and run,” Lunn said. “I started falling behind but I told myself I need to get this done.

“My coaches have pushed me all season to make sure I had a good kick, so I knew I could work that and I would be able to work the last hundred.”
