SAN BENITO — At the start of this month, city commissioners decided to build a skate pad at Stookey Park.
That also was while assuring the community they would still try to find a way to make a full skate park happen.
During tonight’s city commission meeting, engineers from LNV will propose overall plans for Stookey Park.
From the beginning, the engineering firm has been tasked with the plans for the park.
The skate pad will be located at Stookey Park adjacent to the old, troubled pool.
Parks and Recreation Director Art Garza said about $24,000 in federal Community Development Block Grant funds have been allocated to pay for new equipment and to repair existing equipment as needed.
“The skating community needs a place where they can go and use their skateboards,” he said.
The skate pad measuring 80-feet by 30-feet hopefully will be installed by May.
“The work that can be done will be done in-house,” Garza said. “We will also continue to find funding for the future skate park.”
Meanwhile, Garza said they will still be looking into building a full skate park at that location.
City commissioners were pleased with the decision, and assured the public this was only phase one of a bigger and better skate park.
In addition, city commissioners will discuss a number of other items pertaining to different city-related matters.
Commissioners are expected to discuss and take possible action to allow Henry Thomae and B.J. Garcia to bring mud and drag racing to the city’s airport property, take possible action on an updated law enforcement application for participation between the police department and state and consider updating the police department’s policy manual.
They also will consider approving a grant agreement allowing the police department to participate in the “click-it-or-ticket-it” seat belt campaign
Commissioners also will receive an update regarding street repairs.
