HARLINGEN — Valeria Montero of Harlingen South recently dominated senior Larissa Lopez of Los Fresnos to win the singles championship at the Los Fresnos Invitational tennis tournament.
While the 6-0, 6-1 sweep over the Lady Falcons’ top player was impressive, the fact that Montero is only a freshman who started playing tennis just a few years ago, made the victory that much more spectacular.
“She is the best freshman I’ve ever had play for me here at South. And at a program like ours, that’s saying quite a lot,” said longtime Hawks tennis coach Noe Stillman of Montero.
“She’s just a natural. She’s a super ball striker and has just taken to the sport. It’s comforting to me as a coach to know that she’ll be around for the next four seasons.”
