HARLINGEN — Ten Marine Corps veterans who fought in the Battle of Iwo Jima helped to commemorate that World War II campaign for air supremacy.
They were among the more than 300 people who were in attendance yesterday for Marine Military Academy’s traditional parade in honor of the Iwo Jima veterans. The battle on the Pacific island began on Feb. 19, 1945.
The battle was supposed to be a three-day conflict, but turned into 36 days. It is the bloodiest battle in Marine Corps history.
The objective of the operation was to seize the island for the air strips to land American bombers and other war planes.
Harlingen resident Daniel Flores was a Marine at the battle.
He was awarded the Silver Star for his efforts.
