Officials gearing up for May 1 elections

Voters in several jurisdictions in the Rio Grande Valley have until April 1 to register to vote in city, school district and assorted other elections that will be held on May 1, the uniform election day for local political subdivisions in Texas.

Texas Secretary of State Ruth R. Hughs on Tuesday reminded all eligible Texas voters of the April 1 deadline and urged local elected officials to encourage their fellow Texans to register to vote in the May 1 election and prepare to do so.

Cameron County Elections Administrator Remi Garza said numerous jurisdictions will be holding elections May 1, among them the City of Brownsville, the City of San Benito and its school district, and the Los Fresnos Consolidated Independent School District, which will be holding a bond election.

Additionally, the Point Isabel Independent School District will hold elections that day, as will the Port Isabel-San Benito Navigation District, cities of Combes, Los Indios, Primera, Rio Hondo ISD and Santa Maria ISD.

“A wide variety of jurisdictions will be holding elections this May,” Garza said, adding that most but not all of the elections will be conducted by his office.

An exception will be the city of Harlingen and the Harlingen Consolidated Independent School District, which will conduct their own elections, Garza said.
