Three Class 6A softball programs in the Rio Grande Valley made their season debuts in the Texas Girls Coaches Association Top 20 poll which was released Tuesday morning.
The Edinburg Vela SaberCats and Mission High Eagles dropped out of the Class 6A poll, but the Edinburg North Cougars, Harlingen South Hawks and Los Fresnos Falcons all earned their first TGCA statewide rankings of 2021.
Edinburg North (4-0) debuted at No. 20 in the state in this week’s TGCA rankings after a stellar opening week to the season that featured four blowout wins.
The Cougars dismantled non-district foe Brownsville Pace and crosstown rival Edinburg Economedes in their District 31-6A opener at home and notched impressive road victories over Mission High and PSJA Memorial as well.
Edinburg North has outscored its opponents 50-9 so far this season.
Harlingen South (4-0-1), meanwhile, holds the highest ranking of any Rio Grande Valley team in the latest TGCA softball statewide rankings clocking in at No. 7.
The Hawks have beaten McAllen Rowe, PSJA Memorial and Zapata twice by a combined score of 46-1 during a dominant stretch of early-season play both at the plate and within the circle. Harlingen South also tied Sharyland Pioneer 4-4 this past week.
Los Fresnos (4-0) checks in at No. 16 overall in the TGCA’s Class 6A Top 20 poll this week, becoming the second District 32-6A squad to earn its way into the statewide rankings.
The Falcons opened up the season with a trio of impressive non-district wins over Edcouch-Elsa, Rowe and Weslaco East. Los Fresnos also crushed Brownsville Rivera 18-0 on Monday night in its 32-6A district opener.
The Falcons are outsourcing their opponents 54-2 through four games this season.
