SAN BENITO — With the start of a new school year beckoning, two of San Benito’s top athletes for the 2021-2022 athletic seasons have found college homes.

Jermaine Corbin, a football and basketball athlete at San Benito, will play football next season at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, and baseball catcher Armando Hernandez, the Valley Morning Star’s 2021 All-Star Baseball Most Valuable Player, is off to Waxahachie to join Southern Assembly of God University.

“It is a blessing to be able to make it to the next level and to be able to give the community and younger generation something to look up to,” Corbin said.

Corbin moved from Harlingen to San Benito as a freshman and enjoyed his time in San Benito. Corbin is thankful for the opportunities he received with the Greyhounds.

The 6-foot-2 wide receiver finished last season with 800 combined rushing and receiving yards, along with 15 touchdowns. Corbin will play in a spread offense for the NCAA Division III champions.

“They have a high-power offense, so it should be fun,” he said.

Like Corbin, Hernandez made a late call. Both athletes were in talks with their future schools for a couple of months.

Hernandez visited the campus for a private training session with the coaches, and a couple of weeks later they decided to go with Hernandez.

“I feel good, I am proud of myself,” Hernandez said. “All of the hard work paid off. I have been hoping for this day, and it is finally here. It feels good.”

Hernandez batted .423, connecting for 33 hits, driving in 19 baserunners and posting a fielding percentage of .988.

SAGU competes in the Sooner Athletic Conference of the National Christian College Athletic Association. Last season, the Lions finished 38-16 and were ranked fourth at the end of the season by the association.

“Not a lot of people have this opportunity, so I want to take advantage of it,” Hernandez said. “I just want to thank everyone that has supported me throughout the years.”

Hernandez will head to Waxahachie at the end of month. Corbin will be in Belton soon to prepare for the looming football season.
