The RGV FC Toros announced the addition of midfielders Aner Gael Gonzalez and Jose Angel Luna to the 2022 USL Championship roster Thursday, both joining as USL Academy signings pending league and federation approval.

As USL Academy signings, both will be available for selection by the Toros during USL Championship play through the 2022 season while retaining their NCAA eligibility.

Gonzalez and Luna hail from the RGV FC Academy ranks, spending time with the Toros’ first team throughout the 2022 season as extra training squad pieces.

Gonzalez, an 18-year-old dual national who was born in Reynosa, Mexico, but now resides in Palmview, is a “physical midfielder with the ability to open the field and create chances rapidly,” accordding to a news release by the Toros.

Luna, a Weslaco resident since he was 2 years old, becomes the youngest player signed to a USL Academy contract in RGV FC history at just 16 years old.

“Angel is a very young talent with wonderful skills that stand out as soon as he is on the field, and he is someone who has impressed the staff and teammates with his qualities and personality despite his youth,” RGV FC head coach Wilmer Cabrera said in the Thursday release.

The addition of Gonzalez and Luna brings the Toros’ roster to a total of 27 players.

“We are proud and happy for them, and we believe they can pave the paths for soccer talent in the Valley as they continue developing with hope of finding a spot in the RGV FC Toros’ professional team,” Cabrera said in in the release.
