South’s Rocha signs with Coastal Bend basketball

HARLINGEN — Harlingen South senior Alexes Rocha will continue playing basketball next season at Coastal Bend College in Beeville.

“I never thought I would be here at this point, playing collegiate ball,” Rocha said. “There was a point in my life where I was stuck in a dark place. My senior year came, I snapped back to reality and realized I needed to work for what I have. Nobody is just going to give it to me, nothing is given.”

In Beeville, Rocha plans on studying criminal justice, but the senior also expressed the desire to be a nurse as well. On the court, she hopes to play point guard but is willing to do whatever the team needs from her.

“Alexes has put in countless hours working on getting better every day,” Lady Hawks coach Rebecca Littleton said. “She is always asking questions on how she can get better and what she needs to do in order to take her game to the next level.”

Rocha averaged 11.8 points per game during the 2021-2022 season to lead the Lady Hawks to a third-place finish in District 32-6A and a playoff appearance. She also provided 2.3 assists per game and 2.3 steals per game, leading the way on both sides of the court.

“She has worked extremely hard to be a presence both on the offensive and defensive side of the ball,” Littleton said. “Alexes deserves to play at the next level, and I am very proud to have had the opportunity to coach her this past year.”

Rocha thanked Littleton for this season and said if it was not for the first-year coach at South, she probably would not have been here.

“I needed that coach role model in my life to push me, care about me and make me a better leader,” Rocha said.
