The UTRGV baseball team beat New Mexico State 7-2 in seven innings Sunday at Presley Askew Field in Las Cruces, New Mexico, taking two out of three games against the Aggies.

The Vaqueros (20-15) broke the game open with six runs during the fourth. With runners at the corners and no outs, designated hitter Cameron Blake singled through the right side to bring in the first run. Juniors Diego Ramirez and Brandon Pimentel followed with RBI singles to knock out Cam Blazek (1-3). One out later, a wild pitch brought home Ramirez. Then, after centerfielder Brett Cain walked, sophomore PSJA High alum Jacob Sanchez hit a two-run triple to cap the inning with the score 6-0.

Sanchez finished 2-for-3, while Pimentel went 2-for-4.

Junior right-handed pitcher Jesus Aldaz (4-3) racked up 10 strikeouts while allowing five singles and one walk in a career-high tying six innings for the win. After recording a 1-2-3 first inning, Aldaz allowed a leadoff single during the second. He then retired the next seven batters.

The Vaqueros added a run during the seventh on an RBI groundout by catcher Bryan Sturges.

Junior pitcher J.C. Ariza pitched a scoreless seventh to close out the game.

UTRGV hosts Incarnate Word at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at UTRGV Baseball Stadium in Edinburg.
