WESLACO — High school golfers took to Tierra Santa Golf Course for the opening round of the District 32-6A golf tournament Tuesday.
The golfers will compete in the final round today, with trips to the regional tournament on the line. Tight races emerged for silverware and coveted regional spots.
Harlingen South’s Malachi Peña led the boys with a 74, but Peña only holds a single-stroke lead on Harlingen High’s Parker Smith and Los Fresnos’ Nicolas Naranjo. Fellow South golfer Jeffrey Janik trails by two strokes.
“I feel fairly confident going into the next day,” Peña said. “Hopefully, I can keep my game up and play better (today). The next day is always a mystery.”
In the boys team race, Harlingen South, Los Fresnos and Harlingen High will battle it out to be among the top two teams.
It is a two-team race for the girls. Los Fresnos holds a 20-stroke lead over Weslaco High going into the final round.
Weslaco High’s Jazlyn Segura shot 73 to lead the individual title race over Los Fresnos’ Gabriana Garrido and Allison McGinnis, who both shot 77.
It is expected to be a scorcher for the golfers today.
