The Food Bank of Rio Grande Valley is partnering up with the National Association of Letter Carriers to conduct its annual food drive Saturday.
Residential people in Alamo, Brownsville, Edinburg, Donna, Hidalgo, McAllen, Mission, Pharr, San Juan and Weslaco looking to participate, are asked to leave their donation of non-perishable food items in a bag and next to their mailbox before the delivery of mail.
Letter carriers will then collect the food donations and transport it to the Food Bank RGV.
The Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive is a one-day national food drive held annually, aiming to provide people an easy way to donate food to those in need.
Throughout the course of its 31-year history, the food drive has collected over 1.82 billion pounds of food through a postal service universal delivery network that spans the entire county, including Puerto Rico, Guam and the U.S. Virgin Islands, according to the release.
More than 42 million Americans are unsure where their next meal is coming from, with more than 12 million being children who feel hunger’s impact on their overall health and ability to perform in school, according to the release.
Additionally, about 5.2 million seniors over the age of 60 are food insecure, with many who live on fixed incomes and often too embarrassed to ask for help.
“This year’s local Stamp Out Hunger food drive is dedicated to the memory of Abel Orendain. Abel Orendain was a generous supporter and advocate of the Food Bank RGV,” the release stated. “Every year, Mr. Orendain sponsored bags for Stamp Out Hunger to encourage the community to participate and donate.”
