Two Brownsville Police Department officers saved a man from drowning in a partially submerged vehicle early Friday morning.
According to the police department, the man, who authorities have not identified, is still in critical condition at the hospital.
The accident happened May 4, at 3:30 a.m. at Angel Drive and North Minnesota Avenue when a red SUV fell into a ditch and was possibly submerged upside down in about two feet of water, authorities reported.
Police Officer Juan Hernandez arrived on the scene and jumped into the water after a witness said no one exited the vehicle and Officer Edna Mata jumped into the ditch to assist after arriving on the scene.
“Officer Hernandez observed a male subject with his head under water and strapped in with the seat belt,” the police department
said in a Facebook post. “Officers were able to open the driver’s side door but were unable to pull the subject out because of his seat belt.”
Mata then opened the rear passenger door and was able to undo the seat belt, authorities reported.
The man was not breathing when pulled from the vehicle and the officers began performing CPR on the man until he was able to breathe. He was transported to the hospital.
