Edinburg school district officials are increasing security measures at Edinburg High School after an anonymous threat was made Thursday morning, officials said.
Parents were notified via an automated phone system, which is typically the method of choice when the district needs to promptly contact parents, spokesperson Romeo Cantu said.
“We immediately notified parents,” he said in a written statement. “Additional ECISD police will be at EHS for additional surveillance. We are taking all precautions necessary. Please know we take all threats seriously as the safety of our students and staff is always our top priority.”
When asked about the nature of the threat, Cantu said he could not comment on ongoing investigations. But some parents took to social media to notify others of a potential hazard.
“Has anyone heard about the kid that has planned out a shootout today at EHS?” asked Ana Cristina, one such parent who asked not to be fully identified. “Be aware parents a lot of kids aren’t going to school today.”
She said her daughter heard about the threat in a group chat Wednesday night. Her daughter’s friends apparently notified the school, she said, and her children decided to attend school Thursday.
“My daughter had to go in at 6 a.m. this morning,” she said via Facebook Messenger. “She was a bit scared … my sons decided to attend after all, I did warn them about the threat and what they should do if it occurred.”
This story has been modified to clarify that Ana Cristina’s daughter did not report the possible threat to school. It was, to her belief, some of her daughter’s friends who made the report.
