When most McAllen residents were heading to work Friday morning, members of the Rio Grande Equal Voice Network held a rally and news conference in front of the Texas Department of Public Safety office in opposition to Senate Bill 4.
Nearly 30 people held signs reading: “SB 4 Messes With Texas, We Will Fight Back” and “Texas Isn’t Big Enough For Hate.” They chanted: “Qué queremos? Abajo a SB 4,” which translates in English to: “What do we want? Down with SB 4.”
The group, which includes members of LUPE and ARISE, has been active in pressuring cities across Hidalgo and Starr Counties to draft and pass resolutions opposing the law.
On June 29, La Joya and Palmview became the first to pass resolutions against SB 4. In addition to stating their opposition to the bill, the resolutions authorized the city attorneys in each respective city to file an amicus curiae brief in the lawsuit against SB 4.
In August, Rio Grande City, McAllen and the Starr and Hidalgo County Commissioners Courts filed resolutions publicly denouncing the bill.
So far in September, Pharr, Alamo, San Juan, Mission and most recently on Sept. 19, Mercedes, have also passed resolutions against the implementation of the law.
