HARLINGEN — After seven months of planning, the city is close to transforming the Harlingen Farmers Market.
City commissioners have awarded a $113,000 contract to Holmont LLC to build canopies under which the farmers market will operate at its new location beginning in October.
The Pharr-based construction company, which has worked for the city, presented the city with the lowest of three bids for construction of canopies to cover about 20 parking spaces at the City Hall parking lot in the 100 block of East Tyler Avenue.
A $134,800 grant from the Valley Baptist Legacy Foundation will fund the project.
Holmont, which renovated the Tony Butler Golf Course’s club house, has built canopies for the city, Assistant City Manager Gabriel Gonzalez said.
Gonzalez said construction on the 60-day project is expected to begin in the next few weeks.
