State Rep. Janie Lopez

State Rep. Janie Lopez, whose district includes Cameron and Willacy counties, has been named to the 13-member Select Study Committee on Sustainable Property Tax Relief, state House Speaker Dade Phelan announced.

“I am thankful for Speaker Phelan’s trust in my ability to get meaningful tax reform passed for District 37 and all Texans,” Lopez stated.

The committee’s tasks include evaluating the dynamic effects of tax rate compression, limits on taxable value and homestead exemption increases to maximize savings to property owners; studying the viability and sustainability of eliminating maintenance and operations taxes by 2035; examining historical rates of appraisal increases and recommending methods to reduce the tax burden of appraisal increases on all real property; and examining the long-term value of homestead exemptions to Texas homeowners in conjunction with the impact of appraisal increases, a press release stated.

As a member of the Texas House, Lopez has voted three times in favor of passing the largest property tax cut in state history.

“It is time to get results,” she stated. “My work in Austin is not done, and I will continue fighting for lower taxes and for families in the Valley.”
