DPS investigates fatal auto-pedestrian accident in Laguna Heights

The Texas Department of Public Safety is currently investigating a fatal auto-pedestrian crash that occurred Thursday night and would like to remind the public of safety tips when crossing the road or driving.

According to a news release, the crash happened around 9:08 p.m. on State Highway 100 and Madison Street in Laguna Heights where a male pedestrian was struck by a gray Dodge Journey traveling westbound.

The victim, Reyes Garza, 66, “entered the path of the Dodge by attempting to cross the street” when he was struck by the vehicle.

The release states that Garza wasn’t utilizing the proper crosswalk and was wearing dark clothing in a densely lit area.

The driver of the Dodge stopped to render aid, the news release read.

Garza, a Laguna Heights resident, was transported to a local hospital where he died due to injuries sustained in the collision.

DPS would like to remind the public of safety tips for pedestrians and vehicles.

>> For pedestrians, DPS recommends always using sidewalks. If there isn’t one, walk on the left side of the road facing traffic;

>> Pedestrians should always use crosswalks when crossing the street, yield to vehicles, don’t assume traffic will stop, make eye contact with drivers before crossing and be aware that parked cars or other obstacles can block your view of oncoming traffic;

>> Tips for drivers include reducing speed when approaching crosswalks, stop and yield the right of way to pedestrians when turning, be careful when passing buses or stopped vehicles, stay alert and off your phone, obey the speed limit and driving conditions;

>> DPS would also like to remind pedestrians that if they’re hit while jaywalking, the driver may not be liable for damages and insurance may not cover injuries sustained.
