An equestrian facility sitting on 264 acres in South Pharr has sparked excitement and partnerships between the city and school district for a lofty plan.

That plan includes ideas of equestrian therapy, a community garden, a walking trail and a kind of petting zoo. Pharr Mayor Ambrosio Hernandez said the land may one day provide local veterinary care for stray animals.

There’s even talks of an apprenticeship program with South Texas College

But there’s a long way to go before realizing these ideas, and what remains there now are about 35 horse stalls and a Hacienda-style facility that the Pharr Police Department’s mounted patrol unit maintains.
