McAllen airport awarded $3.2 million in federal COVID-19 relief

The McAllen International Airport was awarded more than $3 million from the U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Aviation Administration for COVID-19 relief.

U.S. Rep. Vicente Gonzalez, D-McAllen, announced news of the $3,210,638 grant on Thursday.

“The pandemic has taken a toll on our critical transportation hubs and these funds will help alleviate some of the burden our airports are experiencing,” Gonzalez said in a news release issued Thursday. “Protecting our transportation workers and providing travelers a safe environment while in transit is a top priority.

“I’m proud to help advocate on behalf of the McAllen International Airport and secure this important FAA grant,” he added.

The grant is meant to cover operational expenses caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, such as personnel, utilities, maintenance, salaries and disinfecting processes.

City Manager Roel “Roy” Rodriguez highlighted city employees’ efforts to provide a safe environment.

“The City of McAllen has been working relentlessly to protect the health of residents and visitors traveling through our airport,” Rodriguez stated in the release. “We are committed to utilizing this FAA grant to continue these efforts.”

Also in the statement, Mayor Jim Darling credited Gonzalez for obtaining the additional funds.

“We are grateful for Congressman Gonzalez’s ongoing efforts to provide federal support for important local infrastructure programs,” Darling said. “This FAA Grant award will allow us to ensure that McAllen International Airport operates at the highest standards of cleanliness and sanitation.”
