Panera Bread is officially opening its doors in Edinburg on Tuesday, expecting to create up to 50 new jobs in the area.

This will be the first Panera Bread bakery-cafe opening in the Rio Grande Valley and another location in McAllen is also expected to open soon thereafter.

The bakery in Edinburg, located at 201 E. Trenton Road, will be celebrating its official opening over the course of two days — Oct. 15 and 16 — where they will offer the first 50 guests each day a year’s worth of free “Your Pick Two meals.”

The offer will allow guests to select a combination of two half-size entrees from the menu including soups, salads, sandwiches and other menu items.

The bakery-cafe, which has been described as a $5.9 million capital investment, will be open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Sunday.

The McAllen location is expected to open at 2800 W. Expressway 83 sometime in November.

In August, Edinburg Mayor Ramiro Garza Jr. called the opening “an exciting opportunity for Edinburg residents to enjoy a restaurant we haven’t seen in the Rio Grande Valley before.”

“Our list of retailers continues to expand, reflecting Edinburg’s growing appeal for business investment. Panera Bread is a testament to the success we’re seeing in attracting new businesses to our city,” Garza said in a news release at the time.
