The Brownsville Police Department is warning residents of scam calls claiming to be law enforcement and charging fines.

The scam callers have been claiming to be “Commander Gonzalez” and other police officers and have disguised their phone number by presenting a law enforcement or “Brownsville PD” caller ID, police said in a news release Friday.

The scammers have been telling residents that there is a warrant for their arrest and that they are required to pay a fine.

Authorities are reminding residents that payments for items such as citations, arrest warrants or any other fine are never requested via phone call.

Residents are asked to report these calls in order to determine whether the calls are scams. Brownsville police can be reached at (956) 548-7000.
