It’s not quite Breast Cancer Awareness Month yet but that’s not stopping one local hospital system from hosting an event to raise awareness.

As the month of October approaches South Texas Health System is encouraging residents to “Think Pink.”

The facility will be hosting its annual Think Pink Parade to kick off its month of activities to educate and encourage prioritizing breast health.

The event will be held from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, Sept. 28 at the STHS McAllen main parking lot, located at 301 W. Expressway 83 in McAllen.

The facility is inviting community members to join the parade and help honor the lives lost to breast cancer, celebrate survivors and rally around those still fighting the disease.

They are encouraging participants to decorate their vehicle with various shades of pink.

Prior to the parade, which is expected to start at 10 a.m., the facility will have time designated for vehicle decorating from 8 to 9:30 a.m.

The vehicle with the best decorations in each category — first responders, community/car club and STHS staff — will be awarded a prize.

After the parade STHS will host a program that will feature local breast cancer survivors as well as give attendees the opportunity to learn about the services available at the STHS departments and other community organizations.

The hospital system’s Think Pink campaign will continue throughout the month of October where they will host Mammo Monday each week, where attendees can learn more about breast cancer screening options at STHS facilities.

Mammo Mondays are scheduled for Oct. 7 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at STHS McAllen, on Oct. 14 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at STHS Edinburg, Oct. 21 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at STHS ER Mission and on Oct. 28 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at STHS ER Weslaco.
