Investigators last week arrested a 53-year-old Edinburg man they accuse of being behind the wheel in a fatal January hit-and-run crash.

Pedro Cano

Authorities booked Pedro Cano into the Hidalgo County Adult Detention Center on June 16 on a warrant for accident involving death.

According to a probable cause affidavit, Cano was driving a 2007 Chevrolet Silverado on Jan. 8 at approximately 8:13 p.m. That document does not say where the crash happened, but indicates three vehicles were involved, including a 2005 white Toyota Tacoma pick-up and a 2016 Ford Transit Van towing a single axle 1999 Wells Cargo trailer.

Witnesses and surveillance video showed the driver of the Silverado, later identified as Cano, flee the scene following the crash, according to the affidavit, which said Cano exited through the passenger side door due to the driver’s side door being jammed shut.

When Texas Department of Public Safety troopers searched the vehicle they found a receipt for El Grano de Oro, an abandoned telephone, a Houston Astros baseball cap, a pair of prescription glasses “and multiple alcohol containers still cool in temperature.”

Investigators also identified a Houston Astros baseball cap in one of Cano’s Facebook photos, according to the affidavit.

All those items were submitted to the DPS crime lab in Weslaco for analysis.

On Jan. 11, investigators learned that the driver of the transit van — 21-year-old George Anselmo Jr. — died from his injuries.

The following day, investigators obtained more surveillance video that shows a person believed to be Cano driving the Silverado minutes before the crash.

“The Troopers did not observe anyone else in the vehicle before the fatal crash,” the affidavit stated. “The video evidence links the suspect and vehicle to the crash just minutes before.”

That video also shows the Houston Astros baseball cap and the prescription glasses like those found in the Silverado at the crash scene.

Cano was also arrested on a charge of driving while intoxicated a little more than a year ago on March 29, 2022. He has not been indicted on this charge.

He was also arrested for driving while intoxicated in 2008 and 2010. However, court records indicate he went to trial in the 2010 case and a jury found him not guilty. The 2008 case was dismissed.

Cano, who received an $80,000 bond, bailed out of the Hidalgo County Adult Detention Center on June 17.
