A 41-year-old San Juan man scheduled for a Thursday court hearing pleaded guilty last month to shooting and killing a man who hugged his ex-girlfriend more than three years ago.

Jacob Arroyo

Jacob Arroyo pleaded guilty to murder and aggravated assault on May 8 for the March 12, 2020 killing of 27-year-old Noe Sifuentes.

Arroyo, who reached a plea deal with prosecutors, was sentenced to 45 years in prison following his plea.

Arroyo had been scheduled for a status hearing Thursday with a trial set for August, but those hearings were canceled.

The fatal shooting happened at about 5:30 p.m. that day in the 600 block of West Third, which is where police found Sifuentes face down and not responsive.

Sifuentes’ mother was at the scene and identified her son and told police a gang member had shot and killed her son, according to a probable cause affidavit.

Another witness who identified Arroyo told investigators the man shot Sifuentes several times and “then got close to him and shot him in the head.”

The probable cause affidavit indicates surveillance video from an apartment complex shows Arroyo in the area where the shooting occurred, as well as showing him walking away.

Texas Department of Criminal Justice records indicate Arroyo will be eligible for parole in 2042 though his projected release date is in 2065.

Arroyo also received a little more than three years in credit toward his sentence for the time he spent in the Hidalgo County Adult Detention Center awaiting the resolution of his case.
