Coast Guard rescues 80-year-old kite surfer near Laguna Vista

The Coast Guard rescued a distressed 80-year-old man kite surfing near the Laguna Vista RV Park last Thursday.

According to a press release, the Port Isabel Police Department notified the Coast Guard Sector Corpus Christi of a man about 500 yards from the Laguna Vista RV Park who was distressed and in need of rescue.

“Watchstanders coordinated the launch of a Coast Guard Station South Padre Island Special Service Craft – Shallow Water boat crew and diverted a Coast Guard Air Station Corpus Christi HC-144 Ocean Sentry aircrew to assist,” the release said.

Once the aircrew arrived, they deployed two life rafts and rescued the 80-year-old man and safely transported him to the shore.

The man has yet to be identified but was last reported to be in stable condition.
