McAllen Heritage Center celebrated its 15th anniversary with a party Friday.

The celebration began with an open house inside the historic MHC building as McAllen guitarist Mario Aleman played Spanish guitar. Visitors were allowed to view the exhibits at their leisure.

The celebration moved outdoors to La Placita Park on the south side of the MHC building. Country band Kicker Daddy Legacy also performed for the party.

“Opening this museum was a vision that I had along with Spud (Spurgeon) Brown, and Nedra Kinerk,” MHC Director Elva Cerda said prior to the event. “We’re very proud of the work that has gone into this project over the past 15 years. I think it’s been an extreme benefit to the city and something the people of McAllen can also be proud of.”

MHC, located at 301 S. Main Street in downtown McAllen, officially opened in 2008 — two years after the nonprofit organization that runs the facility was chartered.

It tells the story of the city of McAllen, beginning with the founding of the McAllen Townsite Company in 1904, and the approval of the city charter in 1911.
