Social media videos showing a woman striking a dog and laughing landed her in jail, the Cameron County Sheriff’s Office said via Facebook on Saturday.

Sheriff’s authorities said Jennifer Leah Martinez was arrested on animal cruelty allegations and booked into the Carrizalez-Rucker Detention Center in Olmito on Friday.

Deputies learned of the allegations after meeting with an unidentified individual, who resides out of state, in the Brownsville area on May 11.

“According to the complainant, she saw several videos posted online on Jennifer Leah Martinez’s social media and it showed Martinez striking a small dog while it drank water,” the sheriff’s office said in a news release published on Facebook. “Upon further investigation, the Deputies obtained video footage of Martinez striking the dog, they attempted to make contact with her at her residence but no one answered.”

The sheriff’s office went on to state that a video showed Martinez “laughing and joyful as she struck the dog several times with her open hand.”

Investigators found more evidence from Martinez’s social media account and secured a warrant for her arrest for cruelty to non-livestock animals, according to the sheriff’s office.
