During a brief specially called meeting on Saturday, the PSJA school board named its interim superintendent as the lone finalist for the position.
Trustees named Alejandro Elias as the lone finalist and said they would sit down with him and negotiate a contract at the appropriate time.
The board made the decision without going into executive session.
Elias is on the path to replace former superintendent Jorge Arredondo, who left the district in November.
One person, however, urged the board during public comment not to appoint Elias to the position, criticizing his handling of PSJA’s dual language program.
Trustees on the other hand said Elias has performed exemplary as interim and voted unanimously to name him as the lone finalist.
Elias was previously the principal of PSJA’s Early College High School, a position which he left after breaking with the district’s administration over a reassignment that would have moved him to the central office.
That dispute included some legal action.
As interim, Elias helped launch a forensic audit aimed at providing trustees with a clear understanding of district operations.
Trustees did not announce a timeline for contract negotiations.
