An 18-year-old Lozano man is facing multiple charges after he fired a gun during a domestic disturbance on Tuesday when his ex-girlfriend tried to pick up her belongings.

In a Facebook post, the Cameron County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded to a residence on Jefferson Avenue at approximately 12:36 p.m.

“Upon arrival, contact was made with a 20 year old female complainant at a store located on FM 1561 and FM 345,” the post stated.

The woman told deputies that she and her sister went to Justin Michael Alaniz’s residence to pick up her belongings, but Alaniz prevented her from doing so and became agitated.

“When the women said they were going to call the police, Alaniz grabbed a 9mm handgun and a confrontation ensued,” the post stated. “Alaniz lowered his gun towards the complainant’s feet and pulled the slide back to chamber a round.”

When his mother tried to calm him down, the sheriff’s office said Alaniz pointed the gun at his head and said “is this what you want.”

“At this point, the complainant walked away towards her sister and then heard a gunshot, but didn’t know where it was directed,” the post stated.

She told deputies that Alaniz had been using cocaine since May 13.

“When the women said they were going to call the police, Alaniz grabbed a 9mm handgun and a confrontation ensued,” the post stated. “Alaniz lowered his gun towards the complainant’s feet and pulled the slide back to chamber a round.”

Sheriff’s negotiators, emergency personnel and the Rio Hondo Fire Department were notified and Cameron County Precinct 3 deputy constables and sheriff’s deputies established a perimeter.

Alaniz’s mother, who became uncooperative, was briefly detained before experiencing a medical episode leading to EMS being called, according to the sheriff’s office.

“While EMS were responding to provide medical treatment to Alaniz’s mother, Alaniz walked out of the house and was apprehended,” the post stated.

Deputies initially charged Alaniz with two counts of deadly conduct.

Investigators found two handguns and two long rifles at the location, but no bullet casings. Authorities also found drugs and cash.

During processing at the Carrizales-Rucker Detention Center, jailers found a spent 9mm casing on Alaniz and a vape pen that tested positive for THC.

Alaniz was then charged with tampering with evidence and possession of a controlled substance.
