Village in the Valley will be hosting its third annual Juneteenth Perfecting Unity Celebration in observance of the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of slavery’s end.

The celebration will take place from 6 to 10:30 p.m. Saturday, June 10 at the Edinburg Conference Center at Renaissance located at 118 Paseo Del Prado in Edinburg.

Throughout the event attendees will be able to sit in at a presentation by Dr. Natasha Altema McNeely, associate professor of political science at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, who will serve as keynote speaker.

McNeely, whose research examines the impacts of race and ethnicity in the context of public opinion, voting behavior and political institutions, will be addressing the importance of access to equitable health care for patients of color.

Her research focuses on the examination of factors that affect social capital, immigration attitudes among Hispanics in South Texas, race/ethnicity, gender and political institutions, the impact of interracial marriage upon racial attitudes, and the politics of Black Maternal Mortality.

Attendees will also be able to enjoy music, food, beverages and a live auction at the event.

Those who wish to participate in the celebration can purchase tickets and sponsorships at www.villageinthevalley.org. Ticket prices are $50 for ViVa members while tickets are $100 for non-members. Tables that sit eight are available for $1,250.

The funds raised at the event will serve to continue to provide scholarships and support to community programs such as the community closet that distributes clothes to those in need.

“…These donations will be applied to the areas of greatest need,” the release stated.
