Two Weslaco Independent School District students are among just 750 students nationwide to be named Gates Scholars.

Receiving the Gates Millennium Scholarship, a news release from the district said, took months of applications, resumes and interviews in competition with 51,000 other contenders for Alan Garcia and Eliza Gonzalez.

The scholarship funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation will give Garcia and Gonzalez full tuition to the university of their choice.

“I’m excited that I am not limited to what I can do,” Garcia, who is the Weslaco High School valedictorian, said. “If I want to study abroad it will be covered.” Garcia, the release says, will attend the University of Texas at Austin this fall and with plans to major in biomedical engineering.

“I am very interested in 3-D organ printing,” he said. “I will be combining two fields that I am interested in: biology and engineering.”

Gonzalez, meanwhile, is also going to UT Austin and hopes to become a neonatal nurse.

“I am excited to start my career path,” she said. “I can focus on my studies and not think about tuition.”
